The SPUC is the oldest pro-life campaigning and educational organisation in the world. It was founded in January 1967 to oppose the Abortion Bill being debated at that time. Tragically, over 8.4 million human beings have lost their lives in Britain alone, and abortion remains the single biggest killer of children in the world today. We work to protect human lives at the national and local level, and to build a society free from abortion.
As well as fighting abortion, we also campaign against other direct threats to the lives of vulnerable individuals, such as euthanasia and embryo abuse. We recognise the need to have a consistent life ethic – to value the lives of all human beings equally – and the foundation of this must always be recognising the humanity of the child in the womb.
– it is wrong to kill innocent human beings
– everyone should be treated equally
– all human beings are people with rights
– children deserve special protection and care
– the weakest in society must be protected by the law
SPUC works across all political and religious groups to bring to attention the need to ensure that all human life, whatever form it may take, is equally valuable and important, and should be protected from all possible harm. Each human being deserves the opportunity of life, and no-one has the right to take that opportunity away.
“The inviolability of the person, which is a reflection of the absolute inviolability of God, finds its primary and fundamental expression in the inviolability of human life. Above all, the common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights — for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture — is false and illusory if the right to life, the most basic and fundamental right and the condition of all other personal rights, is not defended with maximum determination.”
